Crime Report: Burglaries All But Gone

Patch reports on the latest crimes in Syosset and Plainview.

The following arrest information was supplied by the Second Precinct of the Nassau County Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction. A spike in burglary reports came this week with five reported in the area, four within one week. One burglary arrest was also made this week, unlike last week's bare arrest report. Daylight Savings Time tends to bring a decrease in burglaries, says Nassau County Police. Brighter nights are not license to let guards down however and cops warn residents to take precautions to protect home and property. Graffiti incidents were reported in Plainview and Syosset, including on a storage shed at Baylis Elementary School.   The Second Precinct reported the following …

Rabbis Urge Public: Don't Rush to Judgment in Kosher Scandal

Area rabbis take "innocent until proven guilty" approach; many doubt the allegations against prominent caterer.

The spiritual leaders of many area synagogues are urging their congregations not to rush to judgment in the wake of allegations against a prominent catering firm. And, in a significant new development, the rabbinical service that certifies food as kosher has come out publicly in full support of Morrell Caterers and has denounced the accusations as "unfounded." "People are generally good," said Rabbi Shmuel Lipszyc of Town of Oyster Bay Chabad in Woodbury. "Nobody should form opinions before research." Many area rabbis repeated a similar theme in wake of the recent accusations regarding Morrell Caterers and its owner, Scott Morrell. In a lawsuit, former chef Michael Savitsky and general manager Tom Cataldo accused Morrell of knowingly …

You Decide: Top News Stories of 2011

All this week, Plainview Patch asks its readers to decide the most important stories of 2011. Take our easy poll to help name the winners.

By any measure, Plainview had its fill of major news stories during 2011. Not all news is good news. Many of these stories disturbed our community and made us think about what needs to be done. But if we read between the lines, we see acts of heroism, generosity, and civic discourse and people working toward a better community. It is important that we remember the past so we can learn from it. Help decide the biggest Plainview news stories of this year, which were whittled down from more than 300 major news stories and based in part on high readership. Take our simple poll attached at the bottom. Here are our choices: HYPOTHERMIA CRISIS: It was the afternoon of Plainview JFK's homecoming game, a frigid, rain soaked day when 18 football …
