'Little Doctors' a Success at Mattlin

Young people learn by doing and community contributes more than 30 pints of blood.

Despite a torrential downpour March 12, the Mattlin Little Doctors' Blood Drive  was a success, bringing in 41 registered donors.

Some of the donors were deferred and two used the ALYX machine (which counts as two donations each)for a grand total of 33 total units donated.

For a rainy, wind-swept day, the figures are impressive.

The Little Doctors were particularly excited about helping this year and were a delight to work with, organizers said. The students greeted and helped register donors with enthusiasm and thanked them with artistic hand-made thank you notes.

They also created a beautiful wall mural for the donors out of paper blood drops personalized with each donor's name.

It was a wonderful night for all involved, and the efforts were appreciated by Plainview PTA Council organizers Colleen Mack-Savino, Julie Kessler and Beverly Sender.

The date of our next drive has changed: it is now on Monday, May 13, 2013 from 3:30 - 9:30 p.m. at POB Middle School and it is our first annual Little Doctors' Blood Drive at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School.
